First Woman to Design the UK Pavilion for World Expo

Es Devlin, a London-based artist and stage designer, is the first woman to be commissioned by the United Kingdom to design their pavilion for the upcoming 2020 World Expo in Dubai. Devlin’s Poem Pavilion features a breathtaking illuminated ‘message to space’ to which each of the expo’s anticipated 25 million visitors will be invited to contribute.

The idea draws directly on one of Stephen Hawking’s final projects, ‘Breakthrough Message,’ a global competition that hawking and his colleagues conceived in 2015 inviting people worldwide to consider what message we would communicate to express ourselves as a planet, should we one day encounter other advanced civilizations in space.

Devlin has made large scale touring stage sculptures in collaboration with Beyoncé, Kanye West, Adele, U2, The Weeknd, Lorde, Pet Shop Boys, and the Royal Opera House in London. Devlin also designed the London Olympic Closing Ceremony in 2012 and the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

World expositions began in 1851. This year’s World Expo in Dubai opens October 20.
